Working in collaboration with the Oakland Community Council, Oakland Task Force, City of Pittsburgh Planning & Public Art and other key stakeholders, Wall-to-Wall Studios designed the award-winning branding for Oakland, the third largest commerce center in Pennsylvania. This brand will be made an integral part of whatever aesthetic is pursued during Phase 3 of Innovation Oakland.
Streets are the predominant public spaces in urban areas. "Smart Streets" is a concept to enhance streetscapes and user experiences by providing access to information and using information to create these experiences, inform choices and enable efficiencies. Enhanced by data driven decision-making, a transformation is underway to reprioritize street space in cities, putting people first and considering green infrastructure and digital technology to activate and humanize the public realm.

Innovation Oakland is a community-wide infrastructure initiative of the Oakland Business Improvement District that seeks to prepare our neighborhood to compete in the 21st century digital age. Cities around the world have enlivened public spaces and generated economic activity via art and technology based projects such as Melbourne’s Federation Square, Chicago’s Millennium Park, Zaragoza’s Digital Mile and Bristol’s Legible City.
There have been several studies and proposals for Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Bus Rapid Transportation (BRT) service between Downtown and Oakland. The Port Authority has proposed a variation of BRT called Rapid Bus Service (RBS) that would convert nine existing bus lines to Bus Rapid lines.

Innovation Oakland is a technology-based approach to neighborhood transformation introducing new ways of thinking about how community assets, public spaces and commercial corridors contribute towards the economic prosperity of Oakland and of the greater Western Pennsylvania region. Home to some of the world’s top research, educational, medical and cultural institutions, Oakland is determined to be America’s first digital community. Fueled by state of the art technologies, Innovation Oakland will combine art, design, place making and way finding solutions to create new interactive public destinations for the use and pleasure of residents, employees, students and visitors from around the country and the world.
Innovation Oakland is a community-wide infrastructure initiative of the Oakland Task Force in partnership with the Oakland Business Improvement District, and Carlow University, Carnegie Mellon University, UPMC, and the University of Pittsburgh.

Oakland is located on a bluff above the Monongahela River in the heart of Pittsburgh, three miles from Downtown Pittsburgh and 21 miles from the Pittsburgh International Airport. As the home of Pittsburgh’s largest research universities and teaching hospital network, it is considered the key to the region’s future economic prosperity. The presence of the Carnegie Cultural Complex, comprised of two museums, a music hall and the central library, also makes Oakland an important cultural hub.
Oakland is the region’s second largest employment and commercial center, after Downtown Pittsburgh, with more than 38,000 jobs and 100,000 daily visitors in addition to 20,000 residents. Two-thirds of the jobs in Oakland are in the educational, health and social services sectors.
Oakland covers four square miles. In spite of the presence of large institutions and substantial open greenspace, Oakland has a gross density of 12,788 persons per square mile, which is more than twice the density of the City of Pittsburgh. Half of its residents are between the ages of 20 and 34, compared to 25 percent for Pittsburgh. This combination of density, youth, culture and technological research lends Oakland a vibrancy that is unmatched throughout the region.
