Who can describe the appeal of Oakland better than a resident who came as a student of an adjacent university and chose to stay? “Oakland is the literal heart of the city. I loved going to school here. I feel the city’s pulse racing through the community. There is rhythm. There is diversity. It’s a really exciting place. It is a place of opportunity to grow and flourish personally and professionally, to live where you work, to open a niche business, and to be part of the wave that is reinventing Pittsburgh. Oakland is the place to be.

Oakland's Community
  • The many ethnicities and backgrounds of Oakland residents - residents young and old come from places such as Italy, Greece, India, Africa, Asia, Central America, and the Middle East.
  • Young professionals, retirees, families, and students all reside in Oakland's neighborhoods.

Oakland is one of the most unique neighborhoods in Pittsburgh. From the Victorian homes in the historic Oakland Square to the towering high-rises along the street corridors in North Oakland, a plethora of different types of architecture can be found in Oakland. One of the most interesting aspects of Oakland’s neighborhoods is the diverse population. The old, European immigrants who came to Oakland during the heyday of Pittsburgh steel production are intermixed with college students, young professionals, families and recent immigrants from all over the world. This unique mix of people and architecture make Oakland the eclectic neighborhood it is today. Oakland’s neighborhoods range from park-like residential settings to thriving business district. Come experience Oakland’s neighborhoods today.

Books For Sale: Historic Oakland by Clifford C. Ham

Historic Oakland is a collection of articles written by the late Clifford C. Ham for The Oakland Newspaper between 1989 and 1995.  The Oakland Newspaper was a monthly publication by OPDC that kept residents aware of what was happening in their neighborhood while contributing to the vitality of Oakland.  The book was edited by Clifford’s wife, Marilyn P. Ham, and is a wonderful collection of articles that give a historic perspective on the way the neighborhood once was, and how each event has lead to what makes Oakland the special place that it is today.
The book costs $12.95 and can be shipped to your home for an extra fee, or you can stop by our office at 235 Atwood Street to purchase one at no extra cost.  For more information, or to order a book, please call 412-621-7863.
